The Well-Lit Search

Panel 1: night lane, an oil lantern on the house wall lighting one small patch of earth; Afandi crawls in it while a neighbour stands at the edge, hands open. Panel 2: both men on all fours in the same bright patch, the neighbour's arm flung out toward the black open doorway behind them. Panel 3: the neighbour sits back on his heels, arms wide; Afandi pats the lit ground on, untroubled.
  1. Neighbour What have you lost, Afandi?

Afandi My key. Help me look.

  2. Neighbour Where did you lose it?

    Afandi Indoors.

  3. Neighbour Then why are we searching out here?!

Afandi Because it's well-lit out here.

The diligence was real; only the territory had been chosen by the lamp.
