The Recovery of the Moon

Panel 1: Afandi leans over the rim of a brick well under a starred night sky, staring at a golden disc in the black water, a stooped neighbour beside him gesturing at the well. Panel 2: Afandi sits astride the rim hauling on a rope that runs down toward the disc, the neighbour standing by with palms turned up. Panel 3: Afandi lies flat on his back with the snapped rope in his fists, the neighbour pointing down at him and up at the moon above the well.

  1. Neighbour: What are you staring at down there, Afandi?

Afandi: The moon has fallen into the well.

  2. Neighbour: You mean to pull the moon out with a rope?

Afandi: Stand back. She is heavier than she looks.

  3. Neighbour: The rope snapped. You are flat in the dust.

Afandi: Look up, man. I put her back where she belongs.

The moon was never in danger; the credit for its return was going to somebody.
