A Change of Address

Panel 1: a night alley under a crescent moon; a burglar in a dark robe hurries off with a bulging sack, a pot poking out, glancing back at Afandi, who strolls after him with a rolled striped mattress under his arm. Panel 2: the burglar has turned and jabs a finger at his own chest; Afandi waits with the mattress, one calm open hand. Panel 3: at the burglar's open door the sack lies dropped and the burglar points away down the alley, while Afandi kneels and lays his mattress across the threshold.

  1. Burglar: Why do you follow me with that mattress?

Afandi: Are we not moving house together, friend?

  2. Burglar: I am a thief, Afandi. I have just robbed your house.

Afandi: I know it well. Walk slower, friend. The mattress is heavy.

  3. Burglar: Then go back to your own house!

Afandi: All I own is in that sack. Where my goods sleep, I sleep.

Property is what a thief can carry; a household is what follows him home.
