The Courtesy of the Mountain

Between two village buildings, a merchant points toward a distant mountain as Afandi beckons. Both wait beside the unchanged peak. Afandi then sets off along the road toward it, while the merchant spreads his hands.

  1. Merchant: Can you summon that mountain here, Afandi?

Afandi: Come here, mountain. I am waiting.

  2. Merchant: Why does the mountain not come?

Afandi: We must not both be stubborn, friend.

  3. Merchant: Where are you going now, Afandi?

Afandi: If the mountain will not come to me, I must go to it.

The mountain said nothing, and proved the more difficult guest.
